How do I join OPL?

Create a free account to browse divisions in your area, express interest, and help seed new regions. When you're ready to play in an active division, upgrade to a $50/year membership. This way you can see what's available before committing.

What does it cost?

$50 per year. That's it. Your membership covers unlimited play across all divisions, team formats, and game types. No per-season fees, no team registration costs.

What skill level do I need?

All skill levels are welcome. OPL uses a performance-based handicapping system that creates competitive matches between players of different abilities. Whether you're just learning or you've been playing for decades, you'll find fair competition.

Do I need my own equipment?

Not to start. Most venues have house cues available. As you get more serious, you'll probably want your own cue stick, but it's not required.

League Structure

How OPL is organized

How are teams formed?

You can form your own team with friends, or browse open roster spots in your area to join an existing team. For singles divisions, you sign up individually and get grouped with other players on match nights.

Where are matches played?

Matches are played at local venues—pool halls, bars with tables, and similar locations. Teams coordinate their own match schedules within the league calendar.

How long is a season?

Each season is 16 weeks, including playoffs in week 16. OPL runs 3 seasons per year:

  • Season 1: January – April
  • Season 2: May – August
  • Season 3: September – December

What rules does OPL use?

OPL follows World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) rules for all game types. This ensures consistent, professional-standard play whether you're in Portland or Paris.

OPL is not affiliated with or endorsed by the WPA.

Skill & Handicapping

Fair competition for everyone

How does the skill level system work?

Every player has a skill level (0-1000) for each game type, based on actual performance.

0 = Never makes a ball
500 = Makes about half
1000 = Never misses

As you play, the system refines your rating—usually within 6-8 matches.

How does handicapping work?

The core principle: 100 skill points = 1 game of handicap.

Your skill level also sets a base race (2-5 games), so both factors combine to create fair matchups. The app handles all the calculations.

Different skill levels for different games?

Yes! Your 8-ball, 9-ball, and 10-ball skill levels are tracked separately. Many players are stronger in one format than another.

Membership & Fees

Simple, transparent pricing

When does my membership renew?

Your membership renews annually from your original signup date.

What if I join in the middle of a season?

No problem. Your $50 covers a full year from when you sign up. You can express interest in divisions and start playing when the next season begins.

Are there any other fees?

$50/year is the complete cost of OPL membership. However, venues will likely have their own table fees, which players are responsible for covering.

Can I get a refund?

Contact us if you have concerns. We want players who are happy to be here.
